Anna Hu,the daughter of a wholesale diamond dealer and a pearl and jade expert. 19
85 was the year Anna started playing the cello and also the year her passion for gemstones was born. Later,as a participant in the Taiwanese government’s Gifted Young Artists Program, she was eligible to be an exchange student in Walnut Hill School for the Arts located near Boston. She spent four years there learning music until she was unfortunately diagnosed with tendonitis. That became the turning point in her life as she decided to pursue her second passion-jewelry design.
After receiving her gemologist degree from the GIA,Anna Hu registered in the jewelry design program at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City. To deepening her understanding of jewelry and the decorative arts, she continued her education. Hu’s next step was an internship in Christie’s jewelry department in New York. The following year she worked in the gemstone department in Van Cleef & Arpels. In 2004 Hu received a master’s degree in Arts Administration from Columbia University.
In 2007,at age thirty, having immersed herself in jewelry history and manufacture for ten years,Hu founded her firm,Anna Hu Haute Joaillerie,a brand specializing in exclusive custom-designed art pieces. She opened her flagship store at the Plaza Hotel in New York in 2008.
Hu’s style is Asian but the craftsmanship is Western. She is the first and only Asian designer working with professional work masters in France and the United States.
